Every other free PDF signer works the same way: you upload the document, a server stamps it, you download the result. For most file types that is a fair trade. For this one it is a strange thing to accept — the documents people sign are offer letters, tenancy agreements, NDAs, settlement terms and contracts, and uploading one hands a complete copy, along with your signature, to a company whose retention policy you have not read.

This signer does the work in the page you are reading. Your browser displays the PDF, stamps it and saves it back to your disk. Nothing is transmitted, nothing is stored, and once the page has loaded you can turn the network off and it will still work — which is also the simplest way to satisfy yourself that the claim is true.

The signature is drawn into the page content rather than attached as an annotation. That matters more than it sounds: a signature added as an annotation can be selected and dragged off the page by anyone who opens the file, which is how some free tools produce a document that looks signed and is trivially unsigned again.

How to sign a PDF

  1. 1. Open your PDF

    Drag the document in or choose it from your device. It is opened in the page you are reading rather than sent anywhere, so a contract, an offer letter or a tenancy agreement never leaves your machine.

  2. 2. Create your signature

    Draw it with a finger, stylus or mouse — a stylus varies the line with pressure, the way a pen does. Or type your name and pick a style. Or photograph a signature on paper and upload it: the paper is removed automatically so the ink sits on the page rather than in a white box.

  3. 3. Place it where it belongs

    Click the page to drop the signature, then drag it into position and pull the corner to resize. The aspect ratio is locked while you resize, so it cannot be stretched by accident. Arrow keys nudge it if you want it exact.

  4. 4. Add the date and anything else

    Switch to Date, Text or Tick and click to place those too. Dates come in four formats, text fields can say anything, and tick boxes handle the "I agree" checkboxes that come with most agreements.

    Press Sign and download. The signature is drawn into the page itself, not attached as a note, so it cannot be dragged off or deleted by whoever opens the file next.

Electronic signature or digital signature?

The two terms get used interchangeably and mean different things, which matters if somebody has asked you for one specifically.

An electronic signature is a mark you apply to show intent to agree — a drawn signature, a typed name, a tick in a box. That is what this tool produces, and it is what almost every request to "sign this PDF" means. It is recognised under eIDAS in the EU, the ESIGN Act and UETA in the United States, and the Electronic Communications Act in the UK.

A digital signature is a cryptographic construct: it binds the document to a certificate issued to you by a trusted authority, and proves the file has not been altered since. It requires an identity check and a certificate that no free browser tool can issue. If you have been asked for a qualified or certificate-based signature, you need a trust service provider.

Some documents still need wet ink or a witness regardless — wills, some property transfers, certain court and family law filings — and the rules differ by country. For anything consequential, check the requirement for that document rather than assuming.

How do I sign a PDF for free? +

Is my document uploaded anywhere? +

No, and for this tool that is the whole point. Your PDF is read into the page, displayed with pdf.js, stamped with pdf-lib and saved back to your device. Nothing is transmitted, nothing is stored, and once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the network entirely and it still works. A signed contract is close to the last file anyone should be handing to a website, and every upload-based signer asks for exactly that.

Is an electronic signature legally valid? +

In most cases yes. Electronic signatures are recognised across the EU under eIDAS, in the United States under the ESIGN Act and UETA, and in the UK under the Electronic Communications Act — a typed or drawn signature is generally as binding as an inked one for ordinary commercial agreements. There are exceptions that vary by country and document type: wills, some property transfers, court filings and certain family law documents may still require wet ink or a witness. If the document matters and you are unsure, check the requirement for that document in your jurisdiction rather than assuming.

Is this a digital signature with a certificate? +

Not easily. The signature is drawn into the page content itself rather than added as an annotation, so it cannot be selected, dragged away or deleted in a normal PDF reader — which is what happens with tools that add a sticky-note layer instead. It is not tamper-proof in a cryptographic sense; only a certificate-based signature is that.

How do I add a handwritten signature to a PDF? +

Two good ways. Draw it directly here, which works best with a stylus or a touchscreen since the line thickness follows pressure. Or sign a white sheet of paper, photograph it in good light, and upload the photo — the paper is detected from the image's own brightness and removed, so the signature sits cleanly on the document instead of in a white rectangle. The second gives a more faithful result if your real signature is hard to reproduce with a mouse.

Can I sign a PDF on my phone? +

Yes, and it is the best way to draw one. The layout adapts, and signing with a finger on a touchscreen gives a far more natural line than a mouse ever will. You can also photograph a paper signature straight from the camera roll.

Can I sign more than one page? +

Yes. Move between pages and place a signature, date or initial on each — many agreements want initials on every page and a full signature at the end. Everything is applied in one pass when you download.

Does it remember my signature for next time? +

Only if you ask it to. There is a "Remember on this device" option, off by default, which stores the signature in your browser's local storage — on your machine, not on a server. It is off by default deliberately: a signature sitting in browser storage on a shared or public computer is precisely the risk this tool exists to avoid. You can delete a stored signature at any time.

My PDF is password protected and will not open. +

A PDF encrypted with an open password has to be unlocked before it can be displayed or modified. Open it in a reader with the password, save an unprotected copy, and sign that. This tool will not attempt to bypass a password.

Can I fill in form fields as well as sign? +

You can place text anywhere on the page, which covers filling in a name, an address, a reference number or a date on a printed-style form. That is not the same as completing an interactive AcroForm field — this writes onto the page rather than into the form structure — but for a document you are about to send back as a finished PDF the result is the same.

Is there a file size or page limit? +

None imposed by the tool. The ceiling is your device memory, since the document is held in the browser rather than on a server. Ordinary agreements and contracts are comfortably within it.
