The subject is found automatically the moment you drop a file in: the tool works inward from the edges of the picture, treating what it can reach as background. That approach follows a graded studio backdrop from light to dark rather than needing one flat colour, and it will not punch a hole through a pale patch inside your subject — a plain colour key does both of those things wrong.

Worth saying plainly: this is not an AI cutout. It is classical image processing running on your own machine. On a product shot, a headshot against a backdrop, a logo or a screenshot, it does the job cleanly. On a person in a busy street it will not, and no amount of tolerance-fiddling will change that — the brush is there to rescue a near miss, not to hand-trace a hard one. The alternative would be uploading your photo to someone's server, which every hosted remover requires and this one deliberately avoids.

Once the shape is right, the background is yours to choose. Transparent for a PNG you will place on something else, a solid colour for a marketplace listing that demands white, or the original scene blurred behind the subject when you want context without clutter. A soft drop shadow under Effects stops the result looking pasted on.

How do I remove a background for free? +

Does this use AI? +

No, and it is worth being straight about that. This uses classical image processing — a flood fill that grows inward from the edges of the picture, colour matching, and a manual brush — rather than a trained segmentation model. A learned model would handle cluttered scenes better, but it would mean either downloading megabytes of model weights or sending your photo to a server. Since every tool here promises the file never leaves your device, the trade was to stay local and be clear about where the method is strong and where it is not.

Which photos does it work well on? +

Anything shot against a plain, studio or evenly graded background: product photography, items on a white surface, headshots on a backdrop, logos and graphics, screenshots. It follows a gradient backdrop rather than needing one flat colour, and it will not punch a hole through a light-coloured area inside your subject the way a simple colour key does.

Which photos does it struggle with? +

Busy, detailed backgrounds — a person in a street, a pet on a patterned rug, anything where the background is as varied as the subject. It will also struggle where subject and background are close in colour, and with very fine detail such as flyaway hair or foliage. For those, a dedicated AI cutout service will do better; the brush is there to rescue a near miss rather than to hand-trace a hard one.

How do I fix a cutout that took too much or too little? +

Two ways. Change the tolerance and press Auto-detect again — lower removes less, higher removes more. Or use the brush: "Bring back" paints the subject back in where it was over-eagerly removed, and "Erase" removes background it missed. Each stroke is one undo step, so you can work quickly and step back freely.

Can I put a different colour behind the subject? +

Yes. Under Background, choose a solid colour and pick any shade — useful for passport-style photos, marketplace listings that require a white background, or matching a brand colour. There is also a blurred-original option, which keeps the scene behind the subject but throws it out of focus.

Why does my downloaded image have a white background instead of a transparent one? +

Almost certainly because it was saved as JPG, which has no transparency at all and cannot store it. Save as PNG or WebP instead — both keep the alpha channel. The tool warns about this when the combination is selected.

What does the feather control do? +

It softens the outline of the cutout by a couple of pixels. Without it the edge is hard and slightly jagged, which is what makes a cutout look pasted on. A little improves almost every result; too much starts eating into fine detail, so it defaults low.

Is my image uploaded anywhere? +

No. The detection, the brush and the final render all run inside your browser, and nothing is transmitted. This is the main practical difference from the hosted background removers — those necessarily upload your picture to do the work. Once this page has loaded it works with the network off.

Will there be a watermark, or a limit on how many I can do? +

Neither. There is no watermark at any resolution, no account, no daily cap and no paid tier. Since the work happens on your own device there is nothing for anyone to meter.
