A historical quote carries more weight when the viewer knows when it was said. “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat” is a good line on its own and a remarkable one when you know it was Churchill’s first speech as Prime Minister, three days into the job, in May 1940.

That is what the attribution and footnote lines are for. Speaker and date go in the attribution; the circumstance goes in the footnote and arrives once the quote has been read. The result is a card that teaches something rather than just decorating a sentence.

The Retro and Dark templates suit period material particularly well, though every template works with every scene type.

Tips that actually help

Frequently asked questions

How do I show the speaker and the date together? +

Both go in the attribution line — “— Winston Churchill, 13 May 1940” — which sits under the quote and stays for the whole card.

Are historical quotes copyrighted? +

Short quotations are generally usable, and older material is often in the public domain, but the rules vary by country and by how much you quote. You are responsible for what you publish.

Can I mix quote cards with trivia questions? +

Yes. One project can hold quote cards and quiz rounds together — a quote card followed by a question about who said it works well.
