Proverbs are quotes with a missing half. “A stitch in time saves nine” is complete as a sentence and incomplete as a thought — the interesting part is what it actually means and where it came from. That gives a proverb card a natural three-part structure: the saying, the source, and a line of explanation.
YAQUIZO supports exactly that shape. The proverb goes in the main text, the origin goes in the attribution line, and the meaning goes in the footnote, which arrives at the end of the card rather than competing with the saying for attention.
Because proverbs are short, they pack well: ten of them still fit comfortably inside a minute.
Tips that actually help
-
Put the meaning in the footnote
A proverb and its explanation on screen at the same time makes the viewer read both at once and absorb neither. The footnote slot exists so the meaning arrives after the saying has landed.
-
Name the culture, not just “ancient”
“Chinese proverb” or “Yoruba proverb” is specific and checkable. “Ancient wisdom” reads as filler and invites the comment asking which ancients.
-
Group by theme, not by country
Five proverbs about patience from five cultures is a video. Five proverbs from one country is a list.
Frequently asked questions
Can I show the proverb and its meaning on the same card? +
Yes. The footnote line appears at the end of the same card, so the viewer reads the saying first and the explanation second without a scene change.
Can I use proverbs in another language? +
Yes. Any language the chosen font supports renders correctly, and you can put the original in the main text with the translation as the footnote.
Do I need to credit a source? +
Proverbs are traditional and generally not under copyright, but naming the culture or region makes the card more credible and is usually what viewers ask about.
